4 March 2000
Participating: James, Joel, Steve.
We were going for a bit longer pieces, more atmospheric, and not doing a machine
approach this time. Steve forgot his E-Bow, but that led to an interesting
use of a knife (brought on by watching Prian Preston of Onomata and
Smokin' Granny use a small socket wrench as a bow/rubbing implement on his electric bass guitar, rubbing in
fast short strokes below the bass's bridge).
- #1:
Started as a soundcheck that segued into a recording. Joel was
playing with a flute he brought, Steve was tapping on the Yamaha CS-60
keyboard and then plucking the Zeta bass (lowpass filter on "tuba wah" parameters) James
was on the ESQ1 keyboard and playing with an infinite sample loop. Steve
was on the Zeta bass through the lowpass filter.
- #2:
Joel was on drums, James was on the ESQ1 keyboard.
- #3:
the Star Wars story cassette. Steve was on the Zeta bass fed through the
Kaoss Pad (set to #24 stereo tape echo, setting 9.9hold) and using a
Spyderco Civilian as a scratching bow/pick. Note: in order to get this to
work, cranked volume way up. Dynamics could be stunning with more than
slight force if tapping, compression is probably a good idea if trying this
technique again. James was playing the Yamaha CS-60 keyboard. Joel was using the SP-202 sampler.
- #4:
Joel on SP-202 sampler, James on ESQ1 keyboard, and Steve on
theremin (fed through the main board, effect ROM 25, Multitap DDL(1) ).
